Swim Safety

Drowning prevention is an essential component for families. At The Aquatic Zone, we are committed to teaching our families safety skills around water and the life-saving skill of learning to swim. Swim lessons are one of the most valuable ways you can keep your children safer in and around the water. Swimming safety is important for all children. According to the National Institutes of Health, participation in formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children 1-4 years old.

NO FLOATIES

Floaties are not a good replacement for knowing how to swim. Floaties make kids think they know how to swim.

Floaties are not a good replacement for knowing how to swim. Floaties make kids think they know how to swim. Parents believe their children are secure in floaties and are therefore safe in the water. The scary part of this statement is it is a false sense of security for everyone. At the Aquatic Zone, we put concentrated effort on our swimmer’s confidence and water safety knowledge. Some important things we teach in every class are body position and how to experience the feeling of the water. Every lesson, we provide a water safety swim at the end of every lesson. All students practice what to do if they fall in the pool, what are the safety rules, and will work with instructors on their own water safety facts. Knowledge is power and water safety education is where it begins.
NEVER SWIM ALONE

No matter how old you are or how good a swimmer you are, never swim alone. Swimming is fun and can be great exercise.

No matter how old you are or how good a swimmer you are, never swim alone. Swimming is fun and can be great exercise. However, it is also healthy to practice caution whenever water is involved. Always have a swim buddy. A swim buddy can call for help if you get into trouble or even to help with a rescue. You never know when an accident can happen and having a water safety plan is essential in all things in and around water. Water can be unpredictable, so having a buddy with you always is a must! This is especially true for children. During our safety swims at the end of every lesson, our swim instructors educate our swimmers to never swim alone and have an adult present.
KNOW CPR

Accidents happen. CPR saves lives. Being prepared is necessary when you are around water. Our swim instructors are CPR certified and know the importance of always having a prepared mind.

Concentrated education and commitment to safety action before an accident is what makes the difference between tragedy and a scary story. At the Aquatic Zone, we know that CPR knowledge connects the bridge to Water Safety. Be prepared and know CPR. It makes a difference and can be the difference between surviving a drowning or death.

WATER WATCHERS

Water Watchers are the most valuable person at the pool. Anytime there is water children can be tempted to go near the water’s edge & touch it.

Water Watchers are the most valuable person at the pool. Anytime there is water children can be tempted to go near the water’s edge and touch it. This can equal a fall in the pool and that is always scary. Also, when there are groups of kids swimming, we want to have an assigned set of eyes on the water. This Water Watcher needs to have a whistle and a plan to notice when there is distress and act! A big part of responsible Water Safety is knowing that the Water Watcher should be top priority. The most important part of a pool party is making sure you have a safety plan in place, and it begins with eyes on the water. Assigning a dedicated and responsible adult to supervise the water in shifts is always a great idea. Remember, saving lives starts with a plan of water safety at the pool.
